Professor Gemma Marfany has been awarded the distinction of the Council of Doctors and the Board of Trustees of the University of Barcelona for her contribution to scientific communication

LProfessor Gemma Marfany, co-founder and associate director of DBGen Ocular Genomics, has been honored with the Distinction of the Council of Doctors and the Board of Trustees of the University of Barcelona (UB) in its sixth edition. The award ceremony was held on April 2, 2019, in the Aula Magna of the Historic Building of the UB. With this distinction, the Council of Doctors and the Board of Trustees of the UB recognize the contribution of Dr. Marfany to the dissemination of scientific advances in Biology, focused mainly in the field of Genetics and Biomedicine and her commitment to the development of bioethics in research.

Dr. Marfany many contributions include her participation in radio and television programs, articles in magazines and newspapers and conferences in institutes and high schools, among a myriad of scientific dissemination activities. She is the author of two books on topics of human genetics, ¿Por qué envejecemos? (Why we grow old), and forensic genetics, El efecto CSI (The CSI effect), both edited by the UB. In addition, her weekly contribution in the digital newspaper El Nacional with articles on current scientific knowledge in genetics and biomedicine enjoys great prestige and has become a landmark of research news for students, professors and professionals from diverse areas aiming to learn and understand the new discoveries.

In addition to her informative work, Gemma Marfany is an associate professor in Genetics at the UB, leading research on molecular and human genetics, the human genome, genetic diagnosis, and gene therapy. Her career as a specialist in human molecular genetics has been developed at the Universities of Barcelona, Edinburgh, and Oxford. Currently, she is IP of a research group, integrated into the rare diseases network (CIBERER U-718), and focused on the genetic diagnosis of hereditary visual disorders and the functional analysis of candidate genes in cell and animal models. She has published more than 100 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals and several book chapters. In addition, Dr. Marfany is a member of the Institute of Biomedicine of the UB (IBUB) and the Observatory of Bioethics and Law (OBD UB).
